After the rape that happened on August 11, 2012, including the “Big Red” high school football players, the name “Little Chicago” has reappeared next to Steubenville’s name. This nickname taints the reputation of Steubenville once more. I believe that Little Chicago brings a negative connotation when used to describe Steubenville, because it basically labels Steubenville as unsafe and “trashy”. It really makes sense when thought about, because not too long ago, about 100 years ago, gambling, prostitution, and bootlegging had been going on in the small, rusty, steel city.
Steubenville is also home to Dino Cellini. To some this name is huge, to others, he is nothing. Why is he a big deal? Well, he ran casinos for New York mobster Meyer Lansky in Havana, Cuba during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Then, he later ran casinos in the Bahamas and the United Kingdom.
Dino Vincent Cellini was born to immigrant parents in Steubenville, Ohio, on November 19, 1914. Cellini grew up during most of the recession, but later took a job at a cigar shop with the, then not famous, Dino Crocetti, more famously known as Dean Martin. “During this era, many cigar stores in Steubenville were fronts for mob rackets; bookmaking, numbers, pool, illegal drinking, and illegal gambling rackets (democracticunderground).”
The nickname "Little Chicago" arrived to Steubenville because like Chicago, it was a hotspot for criminal and gangland activity. The Mafia ties were strong as well. A blogger from the site The American Guide goes and retells the story that his grandfather would tell him of Steubenville:
"My grandfather would tell me stories of how the city served as a go-between for gun runners traveling from Chicago to New York. You could stop in the city for a meal and a drink, play the tables and bed a girl, and quite possibly hear the crooning of the not-yet-known Dean Martin on one of the speakeasy’s stages (in between his stint as a waiter and blackjack dealer)."
He then goes on to talk about how because of these few bad connotations, including the rape of 2012, Steubenville has gotten a bad rep. He mentions two of many good things that happen in Steubs, that are overlooked. Such as the Urban Mission, who distribute over 869,284 pounds of groceries to low income families, and have implemented housing initiatives and mortgage assistance programs to those who need it. He also mentions Easter Gateway Community College, who has one of the lowest tuition rates in the state of Ohio.
As with many things, people are always noticing the bad in things instead of the good. And it's horrible that Steubenville has gain fame from a horrible incident, that two football players caused. Because there is so much more to Steubs, so much history to look at and discover, but no one knows because they rely to much on media sources to make judgements.
